The Spirit of God is Our Personal Prayer Tutor

Author: Pastor Robin Tyner

When it comes to prayer, one of the best kept secrets is the Spirit of God is our personal indwelling prayer tutor. I’m sure the devil is happy that most Christians don’t know the Holy Spirit enables us to pray with passion, direction, and according to the will of God. When we’re honest it’s easy to admit we don’t have a natural passion for prayer. In fact, in our own strength we’re incapable of bringing the necessary energy we need to pray. But, we do know the One who will generate that passion we so desperately need. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, and He shows us how to pray.

Romans 8:26-27 says, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”

Elsewhere, Paul reminds us that it’s the love of the Holy Spirit working in us to impart a passion in prayer (Romans 15:30). We’re also commanded to be under the Spirit’s control at all times (Ephesians 5:18-20).

Sadly, we still try to pray without a conscious reliance on the Holy Spirit. He’s the One who knows us – our needs, our thoughts, and our desires. He shows us God’s will, and makes God’s Word come alive. Apart from His rule in our hearts we are unable to pray effectively. What a blessing that He lives within us, and provides all we need to pray in a way that pleases Him.
